A person’s default problem patterns and default solution patterns are developed based on experiences. As a result of those experiences, when we are faced with certain situations, we resort to a certain way of handling it, responding to it, or coping with it.

The purpose of this exercise, inspired by Bill O’Hanlon and Scott D. Miller, Ph.D., is to learn how to break problem patterns and build strategies to simply make things go better. Following these seven steps and answering the questions thoughtfully will help you recognize your strengths and resources, identify ways in which you can overcome problems, plan and set goals to address problems, and practice useful skills.
