I hope everyone is well and staying calm during these uncertain times! Most of the country is working from home or out of work due to the pandemic. With our regular routines being disrupted by social distancing and mandatory in-home quarantines, whether infected or not, a lot of people feel lost. Let’s take this time to reflect, develop and keep busy so as not to lose our minds! Based on a few conversations I had recently, I wanted to offer five ways to remain productive:
1. Maintain a Routine/Schedule
Still get up in the morning at your normal time and get dressed as if you were still going to the office. Carry on as if nothing has changed. Take time to check emails and think about what could finally be done around the house. It is okay to look good while washing dishes!
2. Don’t Get Bogged Down with Distractions
Now that you are home, it can be easy to be trapped in the spell of distraction. Remember that light bulb that went out that you've been too busy to replace? Do some spring cleaning before you think about watching the news. Also, don’t scroll through social media posts before you post your own business links!
3. Refrain from Lazy Habits
I know – as tempting as it is to sleep in and lounge, what good are you really doing? Don’t let lazy habits reappear because your everyday is different! Think about it like this: Since you’ve been home, if you had a camera watching you all day would you be happy or hesitant to show anyone what you’ve done?
4. Stay Active and Healthy – Mentally and Physically
Oh man! I cannot stress enough to work your mind and your body. Weight gain and depression are the two most common themes that I have been hearing during sessions with clients. The gyms are closed but YouTube has some great exercise content, or yoga, if that’s your thing. Since schools are closed parents, plan a family dance off or something! Read up on a topic that interests you, reach out to friends and family you haven’t spoken to in a while, avoid arguments and use this time to get to know your roommate or significant other a little better.
5. Learn Something New
There are a lot of schools offering free online programs and classes – take advantage! With the market drops and history of financial crisis, develop a better understanding about money, your accounts, and the steps to take to ensure proper protection. Knowledge is everything! Acquire it now so you can apply it when things return to normal 😊
If you don’t think you can keep from the distractions, laziness, and still mind, find an accountability partner! Be an initiator during this time, those who just react will not know what to do when this all passes. Don’t use this time to be casual. I’d suggest starting your own business before binge watching shows on Netflix!
